چکیده

-Illite polytype quantification allows the differentiation of diagenetic and detrital illite components. In Paleozoic shales from the Illinois Basin, we observe 3 polytypes: 1M d, 1M and 2M~. 1M d and 1M are of diagenetic origin and 2M1 is of detrital origin. In this paper, we compare experimental X-ray diffraction (XRD) traces with traces calculated using WILDFIRE 9 and quantify mixtures of all 3 polytypes, adjusting the effects of preferred orientation and overlapping peaks. The broad intensity ("illite hump") around the illite 003, which is very common in illite from shales, is caused by the presence of 1M d illite and mixing of illite polytypes and is not an artifact of sample preparation or other impurities in the sample. Illite polytype quantification provides a tool to extrapolate the K/Ar age and chemistry of the detrital and diagenetic end-members by analysis of different size fractions containing different proportions of diagenetic and detrital illite polytypes. Key Words--Cis-vacant, Illite, Polytypes, Quantification, Trans-vacant, X-ray Diffraction.

The quantitative calculation of SiC polytypes from measurements of X-ray diffraction peak intensities

An experimental determination on powder mixtures of SiC-3C and 6H polytypes using an X-ray goniometer system showed the possibility of quantitative determination of polytype fraction directly from peak intensities. In combination with calculated X-ray intensities of 15R and 4H polytype, the method yields a simple equation system for the relative quantities of SiC polytypes 15R, 6H, 4H and 3C in...

Introducing an Optimized Method for Obtaining X-ray Diffraction Patterns of Biological Tissues

Introduction Individual X-Ray diffraction patterns of biological tissues are obtained via interference of coherent scattering with their electrons. Many scientists have distinguished normal and cancerous breast tissue, bone density, and urinary stone types using the X-Ray diffraction patterns resulting from coherent scattering. The goal of this study was to introduce an optimized method for obt...

Thermal Analysis: A Complementary Method to Study the Shurijeh Clay Minerals

Clay minerals are considered the most important components of clastic reservoir rock evaluation studies. The Shurijeh gas reservoir Formation, represented by shaly sandstones of the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous age, is the main reservoir rock in the Eastern Kopet-Dagh sedimentary Basin, NE Iran. In this study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopic (S...

Effective Removal of Lead Ions from Aqueous Solution Using Nano Illite/Smectite Clay: Isotherm, Kinetic, and Thermodynamic Modeling of Adsorption

Illite-smectite clay is a new mixed mineral of illite and montmorillonite. The ability of nano illite/smectite clay to remove Pb(II) from slightly polluted aqueous solutions has been investigated. The effects of pH, contact time, initial concentration of Pb(II), nano illite/smectite clay dosage, and temperature on the adsorption process were studied. The nano illite/smectite clay was characteri...

Quantification of Phases in Lahore (Pakistan) Airborne Particulates by Matrix-Flushing Method

The mass concentrations of eighteen airborne samples collected from Lahore (Pakistan) are found in the range from 595 to 3027 μg/m with average value of 1130 μg/m. Most of these values are normal and as reported in the literature for other parts of the world. The major phases identified in the samples by the X-ray powder diffraction technique are Albite (Anorthite), Calcite, Clinochlore (Chlori...
